One of the most common questions we receive from prospective customers and family members is “What exactly is non-emergency medical transportation?”
Our answer is simple – its assisted transportation, typically for seniors and those with mobility challenges, and can include ambulatory, wheelchair, and in some instances, stretcher transportation.
Naturally, the next common question is “What type of service do we provide?”
We are pleased to share that Van's Med Tec provides assisted ambulatory, wheelchair, and stretcher transportation and has been proudly serving area seniors throughout Southern Virginia and Northern North Carolina and surrounding regions since 1989.
When sharing the particulars of Van's Med Tec with prospective customers, families, and facility staff, we also like to share the different levels of services – which is significant.
For example, curb-to-curb service is most commonly offered by taxi, rideshare, and many fixed route paratransit services and it is literally just that – curb service. Customers are responsible for navigating their way to the curb to await pick-up. Needless to say, curb-to-curb service is not what Van's Med Tec provides because it is simply not practical for those who are less independent and those requiring more direct assistance.
Door-to-door service is definitely a more personalized service as compared to curb-to-curb, but it still lacks the direct assistance required for customers with stairs at their residence, those in a hospital or residing in a nursing facility, or those located where there are any number of obstacles that require careful navigation such as ramps, curbs, thresholds and more.
If you or a loved one determines non-emergency medical transportation is the ideal transportation solution to safely attend medical appointments, personal errands, family functions or group outings, consider first the mode of transportation followed by the level of service.
Can you imagine making reservations with a local transportation provider, anticipating direct wheelchair assistance, only to hear a vehicle beeping from the street because they only provide curb-to-curb service? Believe it or not, scenarios such as this happen regularly to the detriment of seniors and those lacking the ability to navigate to the curb on their own.
When you contact Van's Med Tec to make your transportation arrangements, you can rest assured that you will never be abandoned at the curb or a front door. Rather, we are committed to ensuring you safely arrive to check-in at your appointments and that you are safely restored to your place of origin. Anything less is unacceptable.
